Cort SFX-MEM OP | SFX-Series Super-Slim Mahogany Electro-Acoustic (Gig Bag Included)
Cort SFX-MEM OP — Super-Slim Mahogany Electro-Acoustic with Gig Bag
The SFX-MEM OP is Cort’s lightest, fastest and most stage-friendly acoustic in the SFX family. It combines an all-mahogany voice, an 83 mm super-slim body, a 24-fret fast neck and the plug-and-play CE304T preamp. A feather-weight open-pore finish lets the thin plates breathe, an arched back restores low-end lost to depth reduction, and the included padded gig bag means you exit the shop ready to rehearse. The long-form narrative below (~3 000 words including headings) travels through the design journey, wood chemistry, bracing maths, ergonomic nuance, electronics chain, sustainability practices and care routine, then distils the essentials into a white–gray specification table.
1 | Genesis — Why “MEM”?
Cort’s SFX concept (Slim-Folk-crossover) emerged in 2007 for electric players who flinched at deep-body feedback on loud stages. The ME suffix denoted “Mahogany Electric” — a variant prioritising mid-rich warmth over spruce sparkle. In 2024 the line gained an extra M: “Mahogany Enhanced Mahogany,” signalling a solid mahogany top rather than laminate. Thus SFX-MEM OP offers boutique-grade tonewood inside a cost-controlled chassis, wrapped in a 65 µm open-pore finish for maximum resonance and minimum glare.
2 | Ultra-Slim Architecture — 83 mm Body, Arched Back
Traditional folk bodies hover at 105–110 mm depth; the SFX carves that to 83 mm. To compensate for lost air cavity, Cort arches the mahogany back 12 mm at the crest and braces it transversely like a violin plate. Measurements: 15 ¾″ lower-bout width, 11″ waist and 3¼″ uniform depth. The Venetian cutaway (≈2.8″ radius) erases the heel wall, granting unfettered 24-fret access. Uncased weight averages 3.7 lb / 1.68 kg — lighter than many Telecasters.
3 | Tone-Wood Matrix — All-Mahogany, All-Warmth
Top. Solid Khaya mahogany, quartersawn, air-seasoned eight months, kiln-balanced to 8 % moisture, then thickness-sanded to 2.9 mm centre / 2.6 mm edge.
Back & Sides. Laminated Khaya mahogany with arch radius: 380 mm. Cross-grain ply orientation resists tour-bus humidity swings.
Neck. One-piece mahogany, dual-action rod, slim C carve, seamless heel transition.
Fingerboard & Bridge. Ovangkol (≈ rosewood density) finished in penetrating oil only.
4 | Internal Engineering — Hybrid X-Fan Bracing
A full dread X brace would over-stiffen the shallow plates, so Cort uses a hybrid: upper-bout X crossing at the sound-hole edge for definition, then fanning three braces beneath the bridge to spread string torque across the arched back. Crest heights 2.4 mm, feather tips 1.6 mm. Result: attack speed rivaling parlor guitars, yet bass extension a good octave below them.
5 | Open-Pore Finish — 65 µm for Freedom
Two coats only: water-borne pore sealer and a low-solids satin poly. Total film 65 µm versus ~180 µm on entry-level gloss models. Gains: +2–3 dB perceived loudness, zero ring-light reflections and a “played-in” feel from day one..
